Breaking the Wall of the Gut-Brain Connection in ALS

The nominating institution Weizmann Institute of Science on the breakthrough:

ALS is an incurable and fatal disease. A recent landmark study has identified a bioactive gut microbiome commensal and secreted product (nicotinamide) as disease modifying in ALS-prone mice. Importantly, human patients featured similar microbial and CNS metabolite alterations. This work provides a conceptual paradigm change, and potentially new therapeutic horizons for this fatal disease.

Eran Elinav is a professor of immunology at Weizmann Institute of Science, and director of the cancer-microbiome division at the German Cancer Research Center. He focuses on decoding host-microbiome interactions and their effects on health and disease, with a goal of personalising medicine and nutrition. Elinav has published more than 200 publications in leading peer-reviewed journals.
