Julie Livingston

Julie Livingston is currently is Silver Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis and History at New York University. She was Associate Professor at the History Department at Rutgers, State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick. She is interested in the human body as a moral condition, including the ethical entanglements engendered by bodily vulnerability in conditions of scarce resources.  As a committed ethnographer, her work builds on interdisciplinary training in history, public health, and anthropology.  For the past decade and a half she has worked mainly in Botswana, in southern Africa. Her publications have explored questions of disability, chronic illness, aging, suicide, personal debt, care giving, disgust, and citizenship.  Currently Livingston is writing a book about Botswana’s lone cancer ward and its associated clinic.
